Huaweis 5G smartphone will consume twice as much power, use copper-sheet cooling modules

Huawei, like many others, is working on a 5G smartphone. The technology has officially gone into its development phase after years of deliberation. The Chinese company has also developed its own 5G chip that will be used in smartphones and other IoT devices. According to a report by Digitmes , the first 5G smartphone by Huawei will consume twice as much power than 4G chips. The energy requirement, hence, will be much higher than current generation smartphones. To make the devices functional, new cooling technology will be the need of the hour. High-quality copper cooling can be used to dissipate heat and Huawei has contracted Aurus Technology, a Taiwanese firm to provide cooling solutions for the 5G-ready phone that is rumoured to launch in June 2019. The company performed preliminary tests this month. The phone will have the Balong 5G01 5G chip that the company showcased at MWC Barcelona this year. The report cites sources close to the company and states Huawei will implement 0.4mm high-quality copper sheets for the cooling modules. Aurus will reportedly have no problem in scaling up manufacturing of the copper sheets as it has worked with Huawei in the past for similar modules. Copper-based cooling isn’t very popular in smartphones. It’s fairly common in laptops, but smartphones have so far used graphite sheets to dissipate the heat generated by the chipsets. Copper offers better heat dissipation, but is also much more expensive. This could lead to prices of smartphones rising in the future. Huawei and other Chinese brands are now the dominating force in the smartphone industry. Six out the top ten global smartphone brands are from China. The market in China itself has matured and registered a decline for four consecutive quarters straight. Huawei was the only brand that registered a positive growth, according to Counterpoint Research. However, to continue dominating a market that has users demanding more value from their devices, innovation will be the key. 5G has been poised to be the next phase of innovation for internet companies. With speeds promised to cross the 1Gbps barrier with low-latency networks, it is going to phenomenally change the way internet connectivity has been used so far. From remote surgery to autonomous cars, 5G has been forecasted to bring them all. Huawei is also one of the largest partners in the devleopment and deployment of the technology. The company is rumoured to launch not just a 5G smartphone, but also a 5G Hotspot dongle to aid the adoption of the new technology.
