Huawei confirms Kirin 980 7nm smartphone chipset

Huawei has just officially confirmed two important things. First, it has developed its next flagship SoC, the Kirin 980, featuring a 7nm design and, second, the chipset will feature in the Huawei Mate 20 series of smartphones which will launch in October. The company has officially made the announcements and discussed the details of the processor via a press release which was sent to South African media. According to Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei Consumer Business Group (CBG), “Huawei will unveil the Kirin 980 at IFA, which will be the first commercially available 7nm chip in the world. The Kirin 980 will power the Mate 20 series. Huawei Mate 20 will launch with the world’s first 7nm chipset this October.” A smaller manufacturing process yields a more powerful and efficient chip, hence, the Kirin 980 is expected to deliver more power and be 40% more efficient that AI-based Kirin 970 chipset. It is based on Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company’s (TSMC) 7nm manufacturing process which is claimed to “improve processor speed by approximately 20 percent and consume approximately 40 percent less power compared to its 10nm counterpart.” Word is that the Kirin 980 will feature an octa-core CPU comprising four A76 cores and four A55 cores, with the larger cores running as fast as at 2.8GHz. As to the NPU, the company suggests that the Kirin 980 will also feature a new iteration of the AI processor that feature improved AI performance.  The news comes at a point when there are already a bunch of rumours regarding Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 chipset. A report has claimed that instead of TMSC, Samsung will be manufacturing the next Qualcomm flagship chip, the Snapdragon 855, through their 7nm fabrication process. Samsung is claimed to have completed work on its 7nm fabrication process a whole six months ahead of schedule and the team has moved on to work on the 5nm fabrication process.  Meanwhile, it may be a little doubt on the first phone that will have the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855, Huawei has confirmed that it will launch the Huawei Mate 20 series (expected Mate 20, Mate 20 Lite and Mate 20 Pro) with Kirin 980 SoC in October. Huawei Mate 20 will allegedly sport a 6.3-inch AMOLED panel and the Mate 20 Pro is suggested to feature a massive 6.9-inch display. The phones will run EMUI 9.0 based on Android Pie out-of-the-box.
