Samsung patents self-healing oleophobic coating for added display durability

Samsung was the first to come up with curved screens on their phones back in 2015 and since then, the company has continued to use it in their flagships, all the way till the latest Galaxy Note 9. However, the screen, as much as it looks good, is also a weak point in the designs of the phones. The display is usually protected by Gorilla Glass, but even then, the curved edges make it difficult for the protective glass to render all round protection. According to a patent filed by Samsung with WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organisation), the company might be taking matters in its own hands it seems to have developed and patented a self-healing oleophobic coating that will be applied on top of Gorilla Glass. The patent states that it is "an anti-fingerprinting composition having a self-healing property includes a polyrotaxane, a polyhedral silsesquioxane, and a fluorinated (meth)acryl compound”. So far, Samsung has been using standard oleophobic coating on its devices to prevent fingerprints from smudging the body. The coating is applied both on the front and back of the body. Having a self-generating coating is likely to provide more durability to future smartphones and also help keep fingerprints away. The patent could also be a solution to a flexible screen. Samsung is rumoured to launch its foldable phone sometime next year. The phone was reportedly exhibited to analysts and partners behind closed doors at CES 2018 this year and it’s likely to come with a hinge and two displays. The foldable phone is going to become its own series as Samsung claims to have surpassed obstacles in quality and durability. However, Huawei is also gunning for the first spot in coming out with a foldable phone, along with Oppo and Xiaomi. The Chinese company has reportedly tapped in BOA to make foldable displays for its product which is under development. 2019 seems to be the year when foldable phones are finally going to become a reality. The new self-healing oleophobic coating is highly expected to play its part in making it an attractive offering.
